Amalaki Ekadashi – Significance, Rituals & Spiritual Benefits

Amalaki Ekadashi, falling on 10 March 2025, is an important Hindu fasting day dedicated to Lord Vishnu and the sacred Amla tree (Indian Gooseberry). This Ekadashi occurs in the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) during the Phalguna month and holds immense spiritual significance.

Observing this Ekadashi is believed to eradicate sins, promote health and longevity, and bring divine blessings. Devotees worship Lord Vishnu and the Amla tree, seeking prosperity, wisdom, and salvation (Moksha). This sacred occasion is also an opportunity to practice charity, devotion, and self-discipline.

Significance of Amalaki Ekadashi

Why is Amalaki Ekadashi important?

1. Amla as a Divine Tree: The Amla tree is considered sacred in Hinduism and is associated with Lord Vishnu. It is believed that Vishnu resides in the tree on this auspicious day, making its worship highly beneficial.

2. Cleansing of Sins: Observing a strict fast and puja on this day is said to wash away past sins (Paap) and purify the soul.

3. Spiritual Awakening: Devotees attain mental peace, spiritual elevation, and Vishnu's divine grace.

4. Health & Longevity: Amla is known for its medicinal properties, and consuming it on this day is considered highly beneficial.

In various Hindu scriptures, such as the Padma Purana, Lord Krishna himself narrates the greatness of Amalaki Ekadashi to King Yudhishthira, emphasizing its power to grant prosperity and liberation.

Rituals and Observances

1. Fasting (Upvas) & Diet

Devotees observe a fast, avoiding grains, pulses, and certain vegetables.

Some follow Nirjala fasting (without water), while others consume fruits, milk, and nuts.

The fast is broken on Dwadashi (next day) after offering food to Brahmins or the needy.

2. Worship of the Amla Tree

The Amla tree is bathed, decorated with flowers, and worshipped.

Devotees light incense sticks, lamps, and offer Tulsi leaves at its base.

Prayers and Vishnu bhajans are recited, invoking divine blessings.

3. Vishnu Puja & Temple Visit

Special pujas are conducted in Vishnu temples, where devotees offer fruits, sweets, and yellow clothes to the deity.

Reciting Vishnu Sahasranama (1000 names of Vishnu) enhances devotion and peace.

4. Night Vigil (Jagran) & Kirtan

Many devotees stay awake all night, singing bhajans and chanting mantras.

Performing kirtans and reading scriptures brings spiritual awakening.

5. Charity (Daan & Seva)

Offering Amla, clothes, food, and donations to Brahmins and the needy is considered highly meritorious.

Feeding cows and donating Vishnu idols, Tulsi plants, and grains brings blessings of wealth and happiness.
