Navratri Day 6 – Worship of Maa Katyayani

Navratri is a festival of immense spiritual significance, and each day is dedicated to a different form of Goddess Durga. On the sixth day, devotees worship Maa Katyayani, the fierce and warrior incarnation of the Goddess. She is known as the destroyer of evil forces and the protector of righteousness.

Who is Maa Katyayani?

Maa Katyayani was born as the daughter of Sage Katyayan after he performed intense penance to please the Goddess. She is the sixth form of Navadurga and is depicted as a four-armed deity, riding a lion and holding a sword, lotus, and abhaya mudra (gesture of blessing and protection). She is associated with courage, power, and victory over evil.

Story of Maa Katyayani

According to Hindu mythology, Maa Katyayani played a crucial role in slaying the demon Mahishasura. She led the celestial forces into battle and ultimately destroyed the buffalo demon, signifying the victory of dharma (righteousness) over adharma (evil).

Another legend says that young, unmarried girls (Kumaris) worship Maa Katyayani to seek her blessings for an ideal husband. This belief originates from the tale of the Gopis of Vrindavan, who prayed to her for Lord Krishna as their husband.
