Sundarkand: The Essence of Devotion and Strength

Sundarkand, the fifth chapter of the epic Ramcharitmanas by Goswami Tulsidas, is a sacred text dedicated to Lord Hanuman's devotion, courage, and wisdom. It narrates his journey to Lanka in search of Goddess Sita and showcases his unwavering dedication to Lord Rama. This section is considered highly auspicious and is recited for protection, strength, and the removal of obstacles.


Why Is It Called 'Sundarkand'?

The name Sundarkand itself means "Beautiful Chapter." Several interpretations support this title:


Sundar (Beautiful) Journey – Hanuman’s journey to Lanka is filled with divine grace and miracles.


Sundar Hanuman – His selfless devotion and service to Lord Rama are praiseworthy.


Sundar Sita-Rama Bhakti – The episode highlights the unbreakable bond of love and faith between Lord Rama and Goddess Sita.


Sundar Lanka Darshan – Lanka’s description in Sundarkand is detailed and poetic.



Key Events in Sundarkand

1. Hanuman’s Flight to Lanka


Hanuman, empowered by Jambavan's encouragement, enlarges his form and leaps across the ocean to Lanka. During his journey, he encounters:


Mainak Parvat – A mountain that offers him rest, but Hanuman respectfully declines, staying focused on his mission.


Surasa Devi – A divine test, where Hanuman outwits the sea goddess and passes through her mouth.


Simhika – A demoness who tries to capture his shadow, but Hanuman destroys her.



2. Entry into Lanka and Meeting Vibhishana


Hanuman, upon reaching Lanka, takes a miniature form and explores the golden city. He meets Vibhishana, Ravana’s righteous brother, who guides him to Sita.


3. Darshan of Goddess Sita in Ashok Vatika


Hanuman finds Sita in distress under a tree in Ashok Vatika. He delivers Lord Rama’s message and gives her his ring as proof of their meeting. Sita blesses him with success and asks him to convey her faith in Lord Rama’s rescue.


4. Destruction of Ashok Vatika and Hanuman’s Capture


Hanuman wreaks havoc in Ashok Vatika, killing Ravana’s guards and setting the city on fire with his burning tail. Captured and brought to Ravana’s court, he fearlessly warns him of Lord Rama’s impending attack.


5. Return to Lord Rama with Sita’s Message


After completing his mission, Hanuman returns to Lord Rama and narrates the entire incident. His devotion and success fill everyone with enthusiasm for the upcoming war.

Important Chaupais from Sundarkand


1. Jai Hanuman gyaan gun saagar, Jai Kapis tihu lok ujaagar.

(Glory to Hanuman, the ocean of wisdom and virtue, who illuminates the three worlds.)



2. Prabisi Nagar Kī Jai Sab Kājaa, Hridaya Rakhi Kosalpur Rājā.

(Enter the city and accomplish all tasks while keeping Lord Rama in your heart.)



3. Sita kara dukh dekhi Hanumanta, mann krudha tana gathani kanta.

(Seeing Sita’s suffering, Hanuman’s heart was filled with rage.)




Sundarkand Chalisa (40 Verses)


Many devotees also recite the Sundarkand Chalisa, a set of 40 verses summarizing the essence of Sundarkand. This Chalisa is believed to enhance the positive effects of Sundarkand recitation and is widely chanted for blessings.
